Kell Brook wins over Carson Jones via unanimous decision – Boxing News
Kell Brook, the WBA intercontinental and IBF international welterweight champion, successfully defended his titles and win streak against the heavily experienced Carson Jones, the current USBA welterweight champion, by collecting a unanimous decision win,
in a 12-round bout held on July 7, 2012.
The bout, certainly an explosive one, was basically an IBF welterweight title eliminator bout.
Despite getting his nose broken in the middle of the bout, Kell did not lose hope and moved on sensibly while evading Carson’s jabs and fists. It was his shift in game plan that aided him to continue with a bloody nose otherwise the bout would have ended
early had Brook allowed Jones to place his powerful punches.
The duo headlined the pay-per-view promoted by Eddie Hearn of Matchroom Boxing and met at the Motorpoint Arena situated in Sheffield, Yorkshire, United Kingdom.
The showdown also witnessed Grzegorz Proksa stun Kerry Hope in the eighth round to become the new EBU (European) middleweight champion. Brook, 26, showed impressive pugilism throughout the bout despite undergoing an ineffective training session.
Kell, also known as ‘The Special One’, just committed one mistake. The young Briton used all his gas in the first six rounds as a result Kell got fatigued in the later rounds. It was the seventh round when a huge upper cut by the knockout specialist Jones
broke Brook’s nose.
The injury was substantial and blood started to gush out of Kell’s nose. It was the early rounds that gave a lead to Kell otherwise he would have easily lost the bout provided the circumstances he faced in the final rounds.
From seventh round and onwards, Carson who kept his energy levels intact started to move forward. Jones, who has collected 24 of his total wins by sheer knockout, targeted Kell’s face.
Carson started collecting points and despite all Kell’s strenuous efforts to defend himself, Jones continued to progress. In the 12th round, just seconds before the ring of the bell, Carson threw a thunderous punch that almost blanked out Brook.
Kell did not lose his senses and waited for the bell to ring. His efforts came to fruition and two of the three judges awarded the bout in favour of the Briton by 116-113 and 115-113 scores. The third judge denoted it as a draw by 114-114.
After the win, Kell while sharing his experience stated, “It was a very important fight for me, I showed I had a big heart and dug deep when I needed to. Carson kept pressing but when I broke my nose it was getting hard to breathe so the final rounds were
hard. I didn’t panic, I stayed in the fight and followed the game plan. Carson knew he’d broken my nose and he kept it going.”
Later on Brook while shedding some light on his dismal training revealed that he will definitely bring a new ‘strength and conditioning coach’ to resolve weight and stamina related issues.
