Kelley Becherer grabs Women’s 100m freestyle gold – 2012 Paralympic Games
Kelley Becherer of USA grabbed gold medal of the Women’s 100m freestyle in S13 category on fourth day of the swimming events at the 2012 London Paralympic Games in Aquatics Centre on Sunday, September 2.
Becherer served notice of her talent in the 100m event and devastated hopes of her challengers, who were eyeing the title of the race.
With her gruelling efforts, she earned a lead of half body length over her closest challenger and hit the wall for gold medal with a timing of 59.56 seconds.
The gold medallist was followed by Valerie Grand-Maison of Canada, who stayed 0.51 seconds apart and sprinted her way towards the finishing blockade for silver medal by clocking a time of 1 minute and 00.07 seconds.
Grand-Maison was chased by Rebecca Anne Meyers of USA, who stayed two body lengths slower from her preceding swimmer and touched the wall for bronze medal with a timing of 1 minute and 01.90 seconds.
Meyers was traced by Rhiannon Henry of Great Britain, who stayed just an inch slower from her preceding swimmer and clocked a time of 1 minute and 02.00 seconds for fourth position.
Subsequently, Henry remained in a lead of 0.32 seconds over Prue Watt of Australia, who settled on the finishing wall as fifth best swimmer by producing a time of 1 minute and 02.32 seconds.
Watt was trailed by Iryna Balashova of Ukraine, who obtained sixth fastest spot of the race by submitting a time of 1 minute and 04.26 seconds.
The Ukrainian swimmer remained 0.61 seconds ahead of Teigan van Roosmalen of Australia, who ended her swim in seventh place by submitting a time of 1 minute and 04.87 seconds.
Roosmalen enjoyed a benefit of 0.39 seconds over Rhea Schmidt of Canada, who struggled hard to improve her position but was unable to surpass any of her challengers and surfaced on the finishing end as eighth best finisher with a timing of 1 minute and 05.26
seconds.
Becherer was happy with her top finish in the event and told that she would struggle hard to achieve the same in forthcoming events.
