Kelly Gunnell wins Women’s 200m breast-stroke gold title: Day three – 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games
Kelly Gunnell of South Africa claimed the gold medal of Women’s 200m breast-stroke discipline on the final day of the 2011 Commonwealth Youth Games in Isle of Man.
Gunnell demonstrated her immaculate efforts in the four-lap breast-stroke swim by submitting a time of 2 minutes and 25.22 seconds for the title of the event. Gunnell acquired second fastest qualification spot in the qualifying rounds to enter the final
but her gruelling efforts in the final round placed her on the top of podium for gold medal.
The South African was followed by Molly Renshaw of England, who remained just 0.28 seconds slower than the gold medallist and reported a time of 2 minutes and 25.50 seconds. Similarly, 15-year-old Renshaw was in a lead of 1.83 seconds over her subsequent
competitor, Natasha Lloyd of New Zealand, who stepped on the podium for bronze medal by reporting in a time of 2 minutes and 27.37 seconds.
Moments later, Justine Macfarlane of South Africa appeared on the finishing wall for the fourth finest spot of the swim, as she remained 0.87 seconds slower than her former swimmer and posted a time of 2 minutes and 28.24 seconds. The fifth finest spot of
the swim was obtained by Karlene Pircher of Australia, who was 0.24 seconds slower than her foregoing competitor and posted a time of 2 minutes and 28.58 seconds.
In the meantime, Emily Jones of Scotland dominated the sixth finest spot of the event, as she remained nearly four seconds behind Pircher and clocked a time of 2 minutes and 32.11 seconds. She was trailed by Erika Kong of Malaysia, who clocked a seventh
fastest time of 2 minutes and 35.05 seconds. Breanna Roman of Jamaica was the eighth position holder of the event, as she concluded her swim in a time of 2 minutes and 35.66 seconds.
Furthermore, Gunnell expressed contentment over her victory, while the winners collected their awards and accolades after the session ended. The crowd was impressed with the wonderful effort which was put forward by all participants.
