Kelly Johnson’s four RBIs help Arizona Diamondbacks defeat St. Louis Cardinals 7-6 – MLB Update
Arizona Diamondbacks’ second baseman, Kelly Johnson was outstanding right through the game as he had four RBIs and went 1-for-4 in the Diamondbacks’ 7-6 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium, St. Louis on July 8.
Johnson was grounded out to second base, Stephen Drew also grounded out to second base and Justin Upton struck-out swinging at the top of the first inning. The Cardinals’ batters also got out as Skip Schumaker struck-out looking, David Freese popped out
to second base and Albert Pujols grounded out towards second base at the end of the first inning.
Lance Berkman hit a solo homer (384 feet) towards right-field to give the Cardinals an initial 1-0 lead during the second inning. The Cardinals rallied again in the third inning and got a 3-0 lead. Pujols hit a sacrifice fly off left-field and Daniel Descalso
posted one run. The second run was taken by Schumaker when Matt Holliday doubled to left-centre.
On the other side, the Diamondbacks tied the game 3-3 by contributing three runs at the top of the fourth inning. Chris Young tripled to deep left-centre while Drew and Upton posted the first two runs for the Diamondbacks. Young added the third and tie run
when Miguel Montero singled towards right-field.
The batters failed to connect the ball during the fifth and sixth inning as the pitchers delivered some impressive throws in ideal line. Ian Kennedy was economical for the Diamondbacks as he gave up just three runs on six hits with three earned runs in his
six inning pitches. He tossed the ball with an ERA of 3.44 and struck-out three batters on his 100 pitches.
In the seventh inning, the Diamondbacks went ahead 7-3 by blasting four runs in no time. Johnson struck a solo homer (381 feet) towards right-field while Juan Miranda, Gerardo Parra and Ryan Roberts each scored individual one run to end the four-run seventh
inning.
The Cardinals were able to put three runs on the score-board during the eighth inning and reduced their lead 7-6. Holliday homered (427 feet) to left-centre while Berkman and Nick Punto both added two runs on the double-run shot of Descalso towards left-field.
In the ninth inning, the batters were struck-out in search of runs.
After that persuasive victory, the Diamondbacks are leading the four-game series 2-0 at St. Louis.
