Keloids And Tattoos =/?

For anyone who doesn't know what a Keloid Scar is, it is a scar that is raised, usually on joints. Then again, if you don't know what a Keloid Scar is you probably can't help me. ANYWAY

So when I was 5 Hot Chocolate was spilled on my shoulder, it was a 3rd degree burn, and after it healed it formed a Keloid Scar.

Then when I was 16 i got my bellybutton pierced, not long after that, a Keloid scar was forming out of the hole, i got it cut off, took out the ring, and then after a year got it re done. It's perfectly fine.

When I turn 18 I would like to get a tattoo. I was just wondering if it was prone to be a Keloid when it heals [raised up].

Thanks for All of Your Help

  1. Wow I know what its like to try to heal and have keloids ruin it, I've tried my nose and bellybutton both I ended up taking out because of the keloid growth. I have multiple tattoos though and before I got my first I was slightly curious if I would heal correctly.. It took about a week longer than usual to heal (compared to friends without this issue) but it did heal! Most of my tattoos are a little raised in certain areas where there was a lot of work done (colourful or black areas) but it is not noticeable, only to me when I feel them. If I were you I would go for it because you only live once.

    Goodluck hun!!

  2. i don't know much about keloids but it really does sound like a question for your doctor first then for the tattooist. - maybe not, you know more than me! but it cant harm to know the risks.

tattoo needles (as well as most body jewelery) are made of surgical steel (like dental tools and surgery equipment)  - but it's a good idea to check this with the tattooist if you decide to go ahead.

    good luck! x

  3. I've tattooed people who've had keloid issues, and they've had no problems.  As long as the tattoo artist doesnt scar you in the first place by damaging the skin, you should have no problems.  I've noticed on some of my tattoos that some of the lines or color will temperarly raise from time to time due to sunburn or irritation, but it goes away.  Like I said though, as long as the artist doesn't scar you to begin with, you should really have no problems.  The best way to avoid getting a hack job artist is to look at different shops, there work, and ask any questions to them personally regarding your concern. don't just settle with one, look around, its important.

  4. well my mom got a tummy tuck and it left her with a keloid scar around her belly button, she has 3 tattoos  (one around her belly button to cover the scar) and none of them turned into a keloid so i dont think yours will, but im not too sure.

  5. i had the same fears because i scar very easy so i got a small tattoo behind my left ear about three years ago and it still looks good. i am actually going for my next this friday ... how did they remove your keloid? i had it done twice and it came back larger each time.

  6. I had a keloid scar when I had a mole removed when I was in my teens (arm pit area). I was concerned about them  when I got my ears pierced, but they all turned out fine. When I was 35 and had a C - section (from belly button down), this formed a good size keloid scar. But I have since gotten several tattoos, with absolutely no scarring of any sort, no raised areas, not shiny after they healed. My tats are on my back, chest, lower arm wrist and calf areas.

So, I would guess that you wouldn't have a problem. The needles really don't go very deep, (it is just a lot of them going in and out many many times). I think it would be more along the same line as a bad scrape healing.

I would advise, telling your tattooist, and then going with a smaller 1st tattoo, with fine lines and maybe thicker lines too, and some color as a test. (of course you should want it and love it too). Maybe placed in an area that is less up close noticeable, like the ankle or calf.

    See what your artist advises.

Good luck with this. (I think everything will be just fine)

  7. You never know, my mother keloids and that was a fear she had but she took a chance got a tattoo and it never keloid. I dont know if it was because they did not keep going over it or not. Check with the tattoo artist let them know your concerns.

Depending on your complexion you might not have an issue.
