Kelvin Young says David Haye should have admitted Wladimir Klitschko was a better fighter – Boxing news
Kelvin Young, who won the vacant International Masters middleweight title at the end of last month, believes former World Boxing Association world heavyweight champion, David Haye, instead of coming up with an excuse should have admitted that Wladimir Klitschko was the better fighter on the night.
Haye, who was more commonly known as Hayemaker, took on Wladimir ‘Dr. Steelhammer’ Klitschko in a much-anticipated unification bout for the heavyweight title on July 2, at the Hamburg’s Football Stadium in Germany.
The 31-year-old brash Londoner, who recently announced his retirement, declared a lot ahead of his bout but on fight night he lost his WBA title to Klitschko via unanimous point’s decision. Haye claimed afterwards he has an injured toe and therefore he could not launch his Hayemaker punch.
Young, who has won 9 of his 10 professional fights, believes Haye should have not fought Wladimir with an injury however when he did he should have not have mentioned it after losing the fight.
“Coming out with the excuses after didn’t do him any justice really,” said the 24-year-old.
“He could have just held his hands up and said he got beat by a better man, instead of coming out and saying he had a broken toe.”
Haye during his career held a record of winning 25 of his 27 professional fights, including 23 of his wins coming by the way of a knockout. He also was the unified cruiserweight champion, holding the WBA, WBC, WBO and The Ring magazine cruiserweight titles. Thus Young admitted he never doubted his countryman’s skills but on the same note he remarked there is no embracement in admiring someone if he is a better fighter than you.
“I admired him as a boxer and admired his punch power and the fact he was a top amateur."
“I was rooting for him to beat Wladimir, but it didn’t happen. Obviously he came up against the best heavyweight in the division and got beat, there’s no disgrace in that,” Young insisted.
Haye was desperate to have a rematch with Wladimir, who currently holds the WBA (Super), IBF, WBO Super, IBO and Ring Magazine championship belts, but when he was turned down by the 6 ft 6 in Ukrainian giant, he walked away from the sport.
