Kelvinder Singh assigned a new role as a forward in the attacking line: Hockey News
Kelvinder Singh, the Malaysian national hockey team midfielder, is set to play a new part in the national squad as a striker instead of a midfielder.
He had been promoted to the national squad from the 2005 National Junior team to which Tai Beng Hai, the current national coach, provided his services as an assistant coach. Kelvinder had been a member of the national squad that participated in the World
Cup qualifiers held in Invercargill, New Zealand in 2009 prior to an injury due to which he had not participated in 2010 Commonwealth Games and Asian Games.
Recovering from injury, he has been selected in the Sultan Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament where he could not make any impact regarding his form and fitness, but he has been given a chance once again to feature for the national side in the ongoing European
tour where he showed some good goal scoring performance playing as a forward instead in the midfield.
“It is good to see him scoring goals but to be honest he is still far from his best. But he has improved and his vast experience is a plus factor,” Tai Beng Hai, the Malaysian national hockey coach stated about the veteran midfielder.
“Kelvinder needs more time and I believe that with greater effort he can get himself back to form. He will then be an asset to us. For the moment we are giving him more time on the field and it is paying off. We may use him as a striker if he continues improving,”
he further added to his comments.
Meanwhile, the Malaysian national hockey team recently is on its Spanish campaign, the part of its European tour, where it has defeated some of the Spanish Clubs along with Spain’s Under-21 side. The Malaysians have now won four consecutive matches in Spain
beating Real Polo Club by 4-2, Athletic Terassa Hockey Club by 6-2, Egara Hockey Club by 2-0 and Spanish Under-21 side by 3-0.
They still have three matches to play in Spain, one against the Under-21 side, while the other two will be played against the national hockey team of Spain, prior to their departure to home on July 9.
