Ken Doherty: It is vitally important for Snooker to have a World Cup – Snooker news
The Darling of Dublin, Ken Doherty, is desperate for his participation in next week’s Snooker World Cup which is going to be held in Bangkok, Thailand from July 11 to July 17, 2011.
The 2011 Snooker World Cup, which will have prize money of $700,000 for the winner, is returning to the scene after a long time as it was last held in 1996.
Former 1997 World Snooker Champion, Ken Doherty, who pairs up with Fergal O’Brien for the World Cup in the Irish team, told the media he is very delighted for the event which has returned after a long time.
The Irish professional reckons Snooker should also have a World Cup like every other big sport, as he believes this game has now become global.
“It's vitally important for snooker to have a World Cup as all the other big sports have some kind of team event where different nations are represented,” said the 41-year-old who is still ranked among the world’s top 32. “We're becoming more of a global
game and having a World Cup is a part of that.”
The world number 29, Doherty, who has successfully qualified for the 2011 Australian Goldfields Open, added Snooker generates a lot of passion and excitement among the people. He stated he has shared his idea with a lot of people in Thailand and everyone
agreed with him on it.
Doherty claimed almost everyone wants to have a Snooker World Cup, as it gives a variety to the Snooker calendar and creates an excellent atmosphere.
While speaking on his inclusion, he remarked, “The event generates so much excitement and passion, and gives some variety to the calendar. I've spoken to some of the other players involved next week and we can't wait for it. I'm already in Thailand doing
some exhibitions and the fans here are talking about it and building an atmosphere.”
Let’s see if the suggestion materialises or not, as it is really going to help in building a bright future for the game.
