Ken Doherty annoyed as Liang Wenbo played without bow tie at quarters: 2011 World Cup Snooker
Republic of Ireland’s team comprising of former world snooker champion Ken Doherty and Fergal O’Brian crashed out of the 2011 World Cup Snooker at the hands of Chinese duo, Ding Junhui and Liang Wenbo
at Bangkok Convention Centre on Saturday, July 16. Doherty, however, wasn't too impressed with Wenbo when the Chinese player came at the baize without bow tie around his neck.
Doherty and O’Brian could not get a second chance to unsettle their opponents in the match as Junhui and Wenbo were quite strong on the table. They defeated the Irish pair convincingly by the score
line of 4-1.
Ireland had a bit of a tussling run in the group matches, and with the help of only one frame win, they managed to make it to the quarter-finals. They entered the knockout stage with high aims but
couldn’t perform up to the mark and lost the quarter-final.
However, despite the loss in tournament, Doherty noticed during the match that Wenbo was playing without a bow tie around his collar. Bow ties are a part of the official dress code of snooker matches
and players abide by this rule.
The 41-year-old Doherty spoke to the reporters after the match, "Liang turned up to play without his dicky bow on in the second frame and that's a dress code violation. The referee didn't realise
it at first and Liang just gets a letter and fine for a dress code violation but he should've been docked a frame. If you play in one of the biggest tournaments, which this is, every advantage does make a difference."
He added, "Waistcoat, dicky-bow, they're all part of the dress code. It makes it easier on the neck to not wear it and there's no strain on your neck. If you play in the final of the World Championship
and take your bow tie off in the last frame you'll have a better chance and all you'll get is a letter or £250 fine."
Doherty was clearly upset at his defeat and could not control his emotions in front of the press. However, the veteran clearly overreacted to cover up for his poor performance in the match, and the
easiest excuse was to target Wenbo, who completely outplayed him in the match.
China has stormed into the semi-final stage of the competition where they will be playing Mark Williams and Matthew Stevens of Wales for the final spot in the 2011 World Cup Snooker.
