Ken Doherty apologises for scrappy win over Egypt in 2011 Snooker World Cup – Snooker news
Ken Doherty and Fergal O’Brien, who are representing the Republic of Ireland in the PTT-EGAT 2011 Snooker World Cup, defeated Egypt by a frame score of 4-1 Wednesday in a match that took nearly three and a half hours.
Though Republic of Ireland desperately wanted a good win over Egypt after they faced a shocking defeat to Pakistan by a frame score of 3-2 in their opening match, Doherty admitted it was not pretty.
The Darling of Dublin, Doherty, lost the opening frame to Wael Talat of Egypt before his teammate O’Brien outclassed Yaser Elsherbiny to level the score-line at 1-1.
Afterwards the experienced Irish pair, who reached the final of the last World Cup back in 1996, won all of the three frames to seal a comfortable 4-1 win but it took them a lot time to reach the finish line as there were no reasonable breaks.
Therefore, the former 1997 World Champion, Doherty, apologised to the people. He told the media he did not provide a good start to his opponent by losing the first frame.
Doherty was sorry as he believes he wasted people’s time and money as he knows they all come to see a good game.
While speaking on his inclusion, he said, “I didn't give Fergal the best start by losing the first frame and there is more pressure put on you as you're also playing for your team-mate. I'm really sorry and want to apologise for that match. We should give
the people their money back for having to sit through it.”
However, in the end the world number 29, Doherty, admitted it was a much needed victory for them and it does not really matter how it came.
“It was a battle, but we don't care. On paper it says 4-1 and it doesn't matter how you got the four - we needed to win by that scoreline to get us back into contention. You only enjoy the winning part, you can't enjoy a match like that,” said Doherty.
