The clash was expected to be and all Doherty show because the former champ had produced tremendous fireworks in the 2012 Wuxi Classic and the 2012 Six-Red World Championship. However, it turned out to be Gould’s play.
Former World Championship winner played brilliantly in the 2012 Wuxi Classic snooker tournament and after winning two qualifying matches he made his way into the initial round of the event. He defeated the former World Snooker Championship winner from England,
Shaun Murphy to book his place in the second round against England’s Stuart Bingham where he lost to him by 4-5.
He showed the same performance in the Six-Red World Championship but was unable to win it. However, the Irishman totally collapsed against Gould by the score line of 5-3 in the first round match of the Aussie event. Both potters played neck-and-neck until
the end of six frames since the scores were 3-3 level. However, after that Gould took charge of the proceedings and finished the game with back-to-back frame wins to ensure his success. Martin looked in excellent form and showed the fans his incredible talent.
In his post match interview with World Snooker, Doherty said, “It was a bit of a struggle for both of us. I know Martin wasn't feeling well, I haven't been feeling great myself. I've been struggling a little bit with sleep but there's no real excuse. It
wasn't a great game, it was a scrappy game and he won some good games at the finish, but I had my chances early on in the match.”
The former champ added, “I've had the benefit of playing in Wuxi and in Thailand and I've been playing ok, just losing by the odd frame in both events.”
Gould has now breezed into the second round where he will be facing China’s Cao Yupeng. The match-up will be a treat to watch as both players battle it out for a chance to advance in the tournament.
