Ken Doherty succumbs to Jimmy Robertson: World Snooker Championship, final qualifying round
Former world champion and two-time runner-up Ken Doherty lost to Jimmy Robertson by a frame score of 10-6 in the final qualifying round of the 2011 World Snooker Championship held at the English Institute of Sport in Sheffield, England.
The Darling of Dublin, Ken Doherty, whose form was looking good as he gained a place in the top 32 in the 2009-10 season, has crashed in the final round.
However, the Robbo, Jimmy Robertson, on the same note has made an accomplishment performance to see off his much-experienced opponent.
Doherty had an upper hand all the way in the first session but the tables were completely turned on him in the evening session by the 24-year-old, Robertson.
The overall score line between the players was 70-58, 37-70, 62-53, 6-103, 113-9, 128-6, 79-47, 46-79, 62-11, 1-68, 22-65, 28-71, 30-69, 1-73, 41-61, and 24-63.
Doherty dominated the opening frame with a break of 64 to have the first blood whereas Robertson responded with a couple of 46 and 24 in the second to level by 1-1. Doherty again pocketed the third with a decisive break of 53 before a classy 91 came up from
Robertson in the fourth to equal the scores by 2-2 before the interval.
After the interval Doherty fired up mind boggling back-to-back century breaks of 109 and 102 in the fifth and sixth to lead by 4-2 which was extended to 5-2 as he also took the following frame with a dominant break of 63.
However, he lost control of his emotions in the eighth, breaking down on 35 and when the chance presented itself, Robertson slotted a magnificent break of 78 to trail by 5-3.
The 41-year-old Irish however showed no reeling effects and wrapped up the ninth by rolling in 52 points to lead by 6-3 by the end of first session.
Doherty was playing very well and was looking in total control but it was totally a different story which came up in the evening session.
It was a one-man show in the evening session as Robertson, who was trailing Doherty by 6-3, bounced back with all of his zeal, energy and strength, and won all six frames in a row.
He did not make any century breaks, as the highest was 65, but rather played a tactical game to seal his victory by 10-6.
Doherty, who was playing a spectacular game otherwise, had his chances in almost every frame but he was not able to register himself in any.
Robertson, after making a great comeback, has now reached the most prestigious event of snooker and will face the world number one, John Higgins, in the last 32 at the Crucible Theatre.
