  1. Ken Norton had far better boxing skills and a superior jab.  This would have won him a lopsided unanimous decison over Smith in my opinion.

  2. On paper, Ken Norton has better credentials than James Smith but style make fight and Smith first round KO of Tim Witherspoon make me believe that he can also solve Ken pick a boo style which is similar to Tim style.

  3. norton by wide decision or a championship rounds stoppage.

  4. Ken Norton would crush the bones out of bonecrusher smith.

  5. ken norton had a glass jaw! bonecrusher would knock him down in the 1st rd. and ko him in the 2nd.

  6. Interesting match-up.  It would depend on a few things.  People tend to look at two facts and form an opinion based on just those facts.  1. Norton gave a Post-Prime Ali a lot of problems.  2. Smith looked horrible against Tyson.  Both are known best for their fights with Ali and Tyson respectively.

If he had ever learned to use his power properly Bonecrusher could very well score an early KO.  Norton LOOKED a lot toucher than he really was.  He never did take a punch very well.  Being a shade taller and a few pounds heavier, it's not impossible to see Smith reaching Norton's chin early.  Neither relied much on foot work so there would be no search.

The other thing to consider is the fact that Norton often froze against big punchers.  Because of his reputation, due mostly to his performance against Tyson, people would find it near impossible to imagine Smith defeating Norton.

Both men, outside the ring, were well educated men.  Sometimes the "thinking" often hampered their performances in the ring.  Norton has many advantages over the post prime Ali but lost because he allowed himself to be over occupied with calculating.  He had the strength and stamina to just cut loose and cause the older Ali to spend himself.  Ali took Norton out of his game.

I guess I would have to take Smith's reputation and lack of killer instinct into consideration.  Norton would over come his fear of big punchers and get past the first few rounds.  Because he has a slightly higher work rate than Smith it becomes simple math.  Norton scores more points in what could have been an exciting fight but turns out to be a bit of a bore.

    Norton by decision in 15
