I know that kendo is not for self defense but dose the acquired skill of speed, reaction, reading the body help you in a fight i suppose? Plus you can go run around until you find a stick and use it right...? hahahaha Kendo is japanese fencing but is it not still the consider as " the way of the sword" or " the art of the sword"?

  1. i think maybe but i doubt because you don't know what too do when reading his body

but you will be better then someone that never toke anything

  2. Kendo actually has a lot of things useful for self defence.

You don't have to find a stick if you are carrying an umbrella, and even a metal 30cm/12 inch ruler will be a weapon in your hands.

Besides the speed, reaction and reading body movements, you also learn about keeping your distance, avoiding attacks if possible and timing when openings are available to you.

It does however depend on how you train and learn your kendo philosophy, because if you do not treat the shinai during your practice/jigeiko as a live weapon, you will not be able to gain the skills that you do if you treat it like a weapon that will kill you.  This changes the perspectives on how you attack, and defend too.

Kendo is 'fencing' by English language definition, but it is the path of the sword by definition because Kendo = Ken + Do, where Ken is the word for sword, and Do is the component of Budo, or the "path of".  So someone who is a serious student and practitioner of Kendo is living the path of the sword.

If you want to take things into more consideration for actual fight situations, then you could suppliment your kendo with Kenjutsu, which is sword techniques versus the way of the sword.  Or you could also learn Iaido, which is sword sheathing and drawing techniques which are extremely important as some of the kata you learn actually is derived from dealing with multiple opponents.

    ^^

  3. If its right for you in theory it can be however i suggest Krav maga

Krav maga is an Israeli self defense, no matter your size strength or weight you can defend yourself and against multiple opponents if need, im only 5,8 and have learned krav maga form an Israeli commando,i am not scared of anyone because it gives you confidence, its all about speed, technique and mind set. Its called krav maga, check it out, i posted some youtube videos

    ,

In Krav Maga they learn how to defend themselves in any situation, knives, gun stick, multiple opponents, its all bio-mechanics , theres no fancy c**p, its get in, Stop your attacker, get out, stay safe

Warning though- dont look for fights, this is not what is taught because this is not a game martial arts, its not UFC, this is real self defense, not a game, its no nonsenses, its not playign around, its agile and affective, its not a game

Just to add krav maga is a mix of jujitsu, judo, shudokan Karate, and mau-tai

  4. Kendo is an excellent art to learn the realities of the sword / katana although you mainly train using shinai,I'd love to join it but sadly its way too expensive re: equipment .

But good luck if you decide to join.

    Best wishes :)***
