Kenenisa Bekele looks forward to bounce back in Brussels – Samsung Diamond League
Kenenisa Bekele, the 29-year-old long distance runner from Ethiopia, who has not been able to end any of his race in the past two years, is looking forward to bounce back at the Belgacom Memorial Van Damme competition which will conclude this season’s Samsung
Diamond League contest.
While talking to media personnel about his resolve to breast the tape for a title, Bekele said that he was planning to cross the finishing line in 26:35 minutes or at most 26:40 minutes over the distance of 10,000m. The finishing time the Ethiopian star
is aiming for is quite near to the 26:17.53 seconds finish, which marks the course record in place for the last six years.
Interestingly, the 10,000m race is not a part of the diamond race showdown. However, spectators in Brussels - which is famous for a number of middle and long distance races, will definitely take out time to see the Ethiopian star’s performance.
For Bekele too, Brussels will be an event where putting an extra effort for overcoming rivals will be worth doing. However, this will definitely not be an easy race for Bekele, as the course record in Brussels is not regarded as runner friendly.
Airing his thoughts, the athlete who has won about two dozen gold medals in some of the major events of his career, said, “It’ll be a tough race here so I don’t want to say I’m going to win but I want to do my very best and we’ll see what that brings. I
just want to run a fast time, that would make me happy.”
While talking about his training, Bekele who possesses 5000m and 10,000m world record, said, “I’ve now been training very well since Daegu and I don’t regret going there, I don’t count it a as a defeat because I didn’t finish the race; I still feel I have
a 100% record at 10,000m. I know that I went there without a lot of good training behind me but I went because sometimes surprises can happen.”
Bekele has always been a great runner, and all is left to see whether this ‘surprise’ happens for the athlete in the race.
