Kenia Sinclair justifies her top place in 800m at the Jamaican Championships - Athletics news
Jamaican athlete, Kenia Sinclair, who specialises in the 800m run, once again proved that she was unstoppable as she successfully emerged in the Supreme Ventures-sponsored Jamaican Championships, staged at the National Stadium on Saturday, June 25, 2011.
Sinclair is regarded as the second fastest women of the ongoing year for the given distance.
The 30-year old performer first appeared in international athletics back in 2005, where she managed to break the 10-year old record marked by Inez Turners and emerged as the fifth Jamaican women who made it past the finishing line below two minutes.
Interestingly, just about a month later, she again went on to improve her effort and this time she stopped the clock at one minute and 58.88 seconds. However, despite such performances, she just missed making a place in the 2005 IAAF World Championships,
as she had finished third in the semi-final.
In 2006, the veteran athlete managed to bag a silver medal at the IAAF World Indoor Championships and also set a new Jamaican Indoor Record. Another silver medal came to her in the 2006 Commonwealth Games, where she not only beat Maria de Lurdes Mutola,
but also broke the national record once again. Her most recent national record rests at one minute and 57.88 seconds.
However, the Jamaican athlete’s good luck ended amid the death of her coach, as she could not qualify for the 2007 IAAF World Championships. At the 2008 Olympic 800m final, she finished sixth despite marking her season’s best time with a one minute and 58.24
seconds effort.
Expressing her thoughts after the win, she said, “I came out here to win and I decided I was going to do whatever it takes to win and that exactly what I did.”
Appearing at the Jamaican championships, Sinclair finished her race in two minutes and 0.96 seconds, which was her slowest time clocked for the season. Providing a reason for her slow performance, she said that it was only because she wanted to make her
rivals feel that they too were a part of the race and were not left far behind by senior runners. Sinclair claimed the 1500m crown also, besides the 800m title. She was of the view that her aim of participating was not only to win, but to also teach her junior
competitors.
