Kenichi Tago beats Wong Wing Ki in Men’s Singles first round at Singapore Open Super Series
Japan’s right-handed shuttler Kenichi Tago proved his elite skills when he defeated Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki in Men’s Singles first round of Li Ning Singapore Open Super Series 2012 on Wednesday, June 20, in Singapore.
The in-form Tago, who is World Number 7 and third seed in Men’s Singles draw of Singapore Open, put up wonderful show of flawless badminton and stamped his mark over Wing Ki in a convincing way.
The higher ranked Tago, who has been getting good results in international events for the last few months, employed his elite craft while playing against Wing Ki and won the battle in straight games with a good margin.
The World Number 19 Wing Ki, on the other hand, failed to put up strong show as he could not command the rallies against his Japanese opponent and lost to him with a decent margin in straight sets.
In the first set, it was the lower ranked Wing Ki who showed his brilliance as he played attacking badminton and earned many points with his powerful smashes.
In the meanwhile, Tago was a little sluggish in the opening half of first game and remained behind his Hong Kong opponent on the board at 7-11 until the mid-game interval.
After the break, the higher ranked Japanese changed his style of play and started to inject more power into his shots. He managed to narrow the game by playing tremendous game and remained successful in making the score levelled at 14-14.
The third seeded Japanese continued his positive performance against Wing Ki in the ending phase of first set and grabbed it with a 21-19 score on the board.
In the second game, Tago controlled the pace from the starting points and he did not let Wing Ki to take lead this time.
Tago was in commanding position in first half of second set and reached at 11-8 until the one-minute interval.
After the break, the Japanese continued executing his powerful and accurate smashes in the right areas and eventually won the second game impressively with a huge margin of 21-14.
The third seeded Tago won his first round encounter against Wing Ki with a superb 21-19 and 21-14 score on the board.
