Question:

Kenmore side-by-side with thermo switch problem?

Notice a few weeks ago that the freezer and fridge were warm. Cleaned up the back, and cranked the thermo dials to max. No success. Called a tech, who said it was low on freon. Unit is just over 10 years old. He replenished the freon and both sides seemed to return to normal. I then reset the thermo for both to where they were before. One week later, we noticed the problem returning. Turned freezer thermo to max and called the tech again. He now said we have a compressor going bad and that it'll cost $700 to replace! Came home that night, and both sides were working again. Starting monitoring temps regularly using an electronic thermometer. So far, so good. The next day, reset the freezer setting again (1 o'clock position) and before long, the temp in the freezer had risen from 0 degrees to 22. Uh oh. Turned the thermo setting back to max, and the temp began dropping again.

Today (two days after repair dude said we need a new compressor), the temps are -2 +/- 4 degrees and 35 +/- 3 degrees. This doesn't sound like a compressor problem to me. Note that adjusting only the freezer thermo setting seems to impact the fridge as well.

Any advice/recommendations welcome! Thanks.
