  1. In another answer, it was commented that if left untreated Kennel Cough can lead to pneumonia and becomes much more expensive!  I am going to attest to that.  I had a rescued foster dog come to me with what had probably started out as kennel cough and had developed into pneumonia.  Instead of costing just the amount for a vet visit and some antibiotics ($150 total), it cost upwards of $800 and a whole lot of extra personal time as we had to bring the dog to the vet every day for 1.5 weeks for 3 nebulizer treatments daily.  There was also the additional antibiotics and the special care.  Not to mention, just how pitiful and sad the dog was!

Some things are just worth the cost for the vet as the risks could be must costlier and trying on your loved one!

  2. If your dog has kennel cough over the counter melds are not going to help at all.

You will need to see your vet and maybe the dog will need antibiotics to clear up the infection.

If you can not afford a vet visit why do you have a dog? These are routine things that come up when you own pets. You need to start saving money and having some put away for things like this when they come up. And when you have dogs they always have something going on.

  3. hi,

Kennel cough is perhaps the closest canine equivalent to the common cold. It's rarely life-threatening, but it sure can be uncomfortable for your dog.

Fortunately, an annual vaccination can protect your dog from kennel cough. If you plan to board your dog, enter him into competition, or let him spend lots of time around other dogs, get him vaccinated. At many shows and kennels, in fact, it's required.

    hope this helps.

  4. If it is truly kennel cough then she would need antibiotics as there is usually a viral component and a bacterial component to the disease. Also remember that she is contagious to other dogs as you take her out for a walk so try to keep her away from them for a while. If the coughing is worse at night, if she has a fever, if she is bringing white frothy matter it is more than likely kennel cough and should be seen by a vet.

  5. If it's been going on longer than a week, you need to take her to the vet. That's exactly what I had to do with my 4 month old pup! They put her on an antibiotic for 2 weeks, and now she's 100% better!

  6. if you cant afford it get a form from the vets that pays for the vet bills most vets do it in the uk.

you just give a donation when you can.

but dont leave it get it seen to as alot of the time things can get worse.

  7. kennel cough symptoms can include a harsh, dry hacking/coughing, retching, sneezing, snorting or gagging in response to light pressing of the trachea or after excitement or exercise. The presence of a fever varies from case to case. The disease can last initially from 10-20 days and can rebreak when the dog is put into a stressful situation which puts stress on the dogs immune system. Diagnosis is made by seeing these symptoms.  It is highly contagious so please keep your dog in your yard and make sure to wash your hands prior to leaving.  It can be either viral or bacterial, if bacterial it will need antibiotics.  If left untreated it can cause pneumonia, which would be more expensive to cure.   Keep the dog warm, inside at night and if it is cold where you are make a jacket for the dogs chest to keep it warm, an old vest can be cut up the front, put on the dog and sew back up.
