Kenny Boynton leads as Florida Gators humiliate Rider Broncs 90-69: NCAA Basketball
Rider Broncs’ dismal run in the NCAA Basketball 2011 continues.
They have only managed to win single game so far in the tournament and just hours ago, they were handed their ninth defeat of the tournament by Florida Gators in a one sided game.
Gators came into this game oozing with confidence after beating Arizona Wildcats in an overtime thriller and that confidence reflected in their performance tonight. They were clinical in whatever they did and dominated the proceedings
right from the start until the very end.
Rider coach Tommy Dempsey boldly admitted that on the night, the Gators were just too strong for his team.
Showering praise on their skills, he added
"I didn't think we could match up with them man for man so we leaned on the zone. They spread out and you can't guard them all. Their shooters are harder to guard in man coverage because they're constantly beating you off the dribble
and then you're always looking for help. They play together so well and they pass the ball so well, I thought our best chance to stay with them was in a zone. But in the second half, once they caught fire, they just put the game away."
Kenny Boynton marshalled the Gators with an outstanding 26 points, including 5 for 9 from the three-point range and 3 for 4 from the charity stripe. Bradley Beal pounded 18 points while Erving Walker and Patric Young added 12 each.
Jeff Jones paced the Broncs with 20 points while Brendon Penn accumulated 12 points and forced 7 rebounds. Anthony Myles (11) and Jonathon Thompson (10) were the two other prominent scorers from the side.
Kenny and Young got the Gators off to a 9-4 start; however Rider responded swiftly and slashed the lead to 1 point in the following minute. After that, until the end of the frame, it was all Gators as Erving and Will Yeguete also
joined in to close the first half ahead by 43-27.
A 14-5 burst, keyed by Bradley Beal, in the opening minutes of second half made it worse for Rider as the lead mounted to 25 points 57-32.
That was it.
Rider never managed to recover from there on and despite some fight from Penn and Myles; they failed to cut the lead and stop Gators from penetrating their D time and time again.
