Kenny Dalglish denies Fernando Torres’ presence affected his side
While speaking to the media after their 1-0 victory over defending champions Chelsea, at Stamford Bridge, Liverpool boss Kenny Dalglish said he did not feel that the presence of Fernando Torres made a difference for his side. Former Liverpool striker Torres
transferred to Chelsea on the deadline day of the January transfer window for a record shattering £50 million.
When Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti announced Torres would be making his debut against his former side Liverpool in the English Premier League, it was expected the Spaniard would score on his debut. Unfortunately for him, his dream debut turned into a nightmare
as he failed to make an impact like he had hoped. Apart from one shot on goal, Torres was hardly a trouble for the Liverpool defense.
It was the Chelsea defense which was overworked, and which finally broke down, giving way for Raul Meireles' goal in the 68th minute. It took one goal for the Reds to secure a win and all three points over Chelsea; Liverpool now move up to 6th
place on the English Premier League table. They are now in contention for a spot in the Europa League season and have a good chance of even finishing in the top four if they remain consistent in the upcoming fixtures.
Dalglish was certain his side were not bothered about seeing Torres in a blue shirt and praised his side for being professional. He said while speaking to reporters, “The players approached it professionally. I don't think (Torres' presence) was any incentive.
The incentive for us was to get three points and we did. Whatever someone else wants to do with their life is up to them.”
The Liverpool boss himself was very professional while discussing Fernando Torres, who has been heavily criticized for his move to Chelsea. Dalglish revealed his goal was to win games and collect three points from each game no matter who the opposition was.
That has been true so far as Liverpool have gone on to secure four wins and maintain four clean sheets in the Premier League.
The Spain international had one decent attempt at goal which was successfully blocked by Jamie Carragher, after which he was relatively dormant. Dalglish continued, “To be honest, he had one shot on target and Jamie Carragher made one great block tackle
on him, but I'm not here to talk about other people's players, I'm here to talk about my own players.”
While the Blues had three superstar strikers up front; Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka and Fernando Torres, Dalglish preferred to have Dirk Kuyt as a lone striker. The fact that Dalglish did not even feel the need to use new signings, Luis Suarez and Andy
Carroll, to defeat the mighty Blues is somewhat worrying for their competition, since Liverpool seem to actually have a chance of finishing in the top four.
