Kenny Dalglish had wanted Liverpool post
Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish has confessed he was vying for the Liverpool manager’s position which was open this summer. Eventually, the club opted for Fulham boss Roy Hogdson, who
had taken the unfancied London outfit to the Europa League final earlier in the year. However, when asked for advice on who he thought should take the reins at Anfield, Dalglish put his own name into the hat.
Dalglish explained: "One day, I was in a meeting with Christian Purslow and the chairman, Martin Broughton, and I formally put my name forward. ‘We don't want you, Kenny’, came the reply
from Christian and the chairman. Fine. That's their prerogative.”
Dalglish was player/manager for the Reds from 1985-1991, and is in fact the last manager to bring the league title back to Merseyside. The 59-year-old went on to manage Blackburn Rovers
in the 90’s, securing the Premier League crown for the Lancashire club back in 1995. But he felt that this was the time to have a second crack at the whip at the club he had served so incredibly as a player, only to be shunned by the club’s board.

It was a clear blow for Dalglish but it appears he still has an important role to play at the club, even if it isn’t on the frontline. “They explained they had different plans for me,
a position with greater longevity." noted the Scotsman. Whether Dalglish would’ve been a better choice that Hogdson is up for debate, but having not managed for the best part of ten years, perhaps the board felt it would’ve been something of a gamble to throw
him straight back in at the deep end. On the other hand, Dalglish knows the club better than almost anyone else, and he is held in the highest regard by everyone associated with Liverpool Football Club.
