Kenny Dalglish says Liverpool new boys were nervous in 1-1 draw against Sunderland – EPL News
Liverpool opened their 2011/12 English Premier League campaign with a 1-1 draw against Sunderland at Anfield. In wake of the stalemate, manager Kenny Dalglish has claimed that the club’s new players were nervous in opening fixture.
Against Sunderland, Dalglish handed league debuts to four of his new signings. Charlie Adam, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jordan-Henderson-c19102 and Jose Enrique, who joined Liverpool from Blackpool, Aston Villa, Sunderland and Newcastle United respectively, all started at
Anfield.
Moreover, Luis Suarez and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Lucas-c22528 also made shock returns to the starting XI against Sunderland. Liverpool took the full advantage of the home conditions and started the match very positively. Liverpool’s attacking approach paid off in the 12th minute
when Suarez scored a headed goal from a Charlie Adam free-kick.
However, the Anfield side failed to match their first half performance as they endured a highly disappointing second half. Sebastien Larsson’s impressive volley in the 57th minute cost the Merseyside club two crucial points and the match ended
as a 1-1 draw.
Dalglish believes that it is hard for any player to make his debut for Liverpool at the historic Anfield stadium. The manager reckons that his new signings were under pressure and is hopeful that the new players will adjust quickly at the club.
He said: "The four boys who came in would have had nerves. I think the players were a little bit nervous. It's a big deal making your debut at Anfield.”
However, he expressed his satisfaction with the performances given by the Reds’ new players and believes that they will only improve with time.
"I thought they all did something in the game that you will remember them for. We are happy with them and they will improve,” the Scotsman added.
Dalglish also shed light on the match’s most controversial moment when, Suarez was fouled by http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Kieran-Richardson-c20946 inside Sunderland’s penalty box. Liverpool were awarded a penalty, which Suarez missed. Kenny has lashed out at the match official, Phil Dowd,
by saying that the Black Cats defender should have been sent off.
"I suppose nine-and-a-half out of 10 referees would have sent Kieran [Richardson] off. You don't want to see people sent off. I don't know what the rulebook says but it was a clear goalscoring opportunity. Luis Suarez was one-on-one with the goalkeeper -
you can't get any clearer than that,” Kenny Dalglish concluded.
