Kenny Rogers arrives at Detroit Tigers’ training camp – MLB News
Kenny Rogers was one of the leading pitchers for Detroit Tigers four years ago. The left handed starter pitched the fourteen perfect game in baseball history and he is also known for his great fielding that won his five Golden Glove awards.
Showing his amazing throwing abilities, he helped the Tigers secure memorable wins between 2006 and 2008. His performance in game three of the American League Championship series against Oakland Athletics will be remembered for a long time. A couple of days ago, the former Tigers’ thrower arrived at the Tigers camp to help the young pitchers improve pitching and fielding.
In an interview with a leading sports website, Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland stated that Rogers will be working with the starters and reliever to help them bring more improvement in their throwing techniques. According to sources, Rogers is very happy about the whole situation. He will be monitoring the youngsters and he will enjoy every minute of the training camp.
"I'm ready," he said. "It will be fun. I'm here to enjoy it a little bit. I get to learn from the coaches how it works. Just because you know how to do things doesn't mean you know how to coach them. So I'll be learning again,” said Rogers in an interview.
"It was awesome -- he was a real nice guy," Smyly said. "He was giving us advice on holding runners. We were going through the motions of pickoffs. He was telling us what he did and then modifying it to our wind-ups. He was guiding us in the right direction."
Despite being a great pitcher of his time, Rogers believes he needs to work with coaches to learn how to coach. Last season, the Tigers did a great job to win the American League Central division title. Tigers’ pitchers struggled to handle the pressure in the playoffs, which led to Tigers’ downfall.
In some ways, Roger’s arrival at the Tigers’ training facility could prove to be vital for the Tigers as he the Tigers have plenty of left handed pitchers in their lineup, including 21 year old prospect Drew Smily.
