Kenrick Monk confesses his lie about accident – Swimming Update
Kenrick Monk, one of the most prominent legs of Australian relay team, confessed his lie about being run over by a driver as he confessed that he had actually fell from his skateboard. The 23-year-old Monk was repentant on his false statement of an accident,
which he released a few days back.
He disclosed that he was going on his skateboard to train at St. Peters Lutheran College in Indooroopilly, on Wednesday, September 28 and he fell over it. Previously, Monk stated that he was riding his pushbike to get to his training centre, where a driver
purposely hit him and ran away. He also stated that his team-members, Stephanie Rice, Nick D'Arcy and Ned McKendry took him to the hospital after his accident.
However, the truth was revealed to Swimming Australia as a witness, who saw him fall down from his skateboard passed the information to the police. Afterwards, Head of Swimming Australia expressed his disappointment over the matter and stayed reluctant in
speaking anything about the incident until the disclosure of complete truth.
Today, Monk apologised to everyone including his family, friends, coaches and colleagues. Monk said he was embarrassed of himself for falling off the skateboard as a 10-year-old can easily ride that. He said, “I am responsible for doing something stupid.
I could not sleep and could not handle (the lies) any longer and I woke up and told mum and dad and started crying. My mum gave me a hug and I was bawling my eyes out. I'm not a liar. I am not like that. My family is not like that.”
An apologetic Monk added, “I rang the police this morning and I changed my statement that I lied about the car and the bike. They are going to look further into that matter. I know it's a serious matter. It is something I should never have done. I wasn't
thinking on my feet.”
Monk will need six to eight weeks for his recovery and with the upcoming 2012 London Olympics, he has little time left to secure his spot for London.
