Kenrick Monk on his way to achieve 2012 London Olympics qualification dream – Swimming News
Australian freestyle superstar, Kenrick Monk has returned to the pool in order to achieve his qualification spot for the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The 24-year-old Monk, who is a key player of the Australian relay squad, stayed almost 11 weeks away from the pool due to his injury.
The injury for which at first Monk claimed that he suffered a hit and run accident but then confessed that he actually fell off his skateboard and stated that even a 12-year-old can ride a skateboard, therefore he was ashamed and thus lied.
Monk’s preparations for the forthcoming 2012 London Games were halted due to the skateboard incident and now the Australian has almost recovered, but it is just a matter of time as the Australian Selection Trials are scheduled in Adelaide next month.
“I have had my days where two days I am fantastic and three days I am not training. It's a slow process. I had to get back in the water as soon as I could. My ligament is still healing but it is a slow process.”
Nevertheless, the Australian competed in the last week’s 2012 New South Wales (NSW) State Open Championships, where he finished eighth in the 200m freestyle final.
“No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes. Some of us make stupid mistakes every day, and I did that. People say a lot of things; if you keep your chin up, keep walking, stand tall and be proud, that is all you can do,” he said.
Monk, who was part of the Australian relay team that captured a gold medal in the 4*100m freestyle while accomplished a silver finish in the 4*200m freestyle, has been training for some time, and believes that he can make his way into the Australian squad
to London.
Making his way into the 200m final at NSW meet after an 11-week bed rest was definitely a noteworthy achievement for Monk. Nonetheless, Monk’s return has certainly intensified the battle at next month’s Australian trials, where the comeback king, Ian Thorpe
will also try to make his way into the 100m freestyle relay team.
