Kent Day announced interim director of competition at Richard Childress Racing – NASCAR news
Richard Childress Racing has announced that Kent Day has been promoted from his position as technical director of competition and will be taking over from Scott Miller as the interim director of competition.
Scott Miller left RCR after 3 years as director competition to join Michael Waltrip Racing. Miller joined RCR in 1997, left in 1999 and then rejoined the organisation as crew chief in 2003. He was promoted to Competition Director in 2008.
Kent Day received his Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering from Clemson University in 2001. Day joined PPI Motorsports in 2003 as race engineer. He then moved on to Penske’s Racing Organisation in 2004, where he worked as chief engineer. Day joined RCR as
technical director of competition in 2009 and has now been promoted to interim director of competition.
Mike Dillon, vice president of RCR, paid tribute to Miller’s contributions to RCR and wished him well for the future.
Day and Miller had been working together for the last couple of years and Dillon expected that this will lead to a smooth transition process within the organisation.
Dillon praised Day’s role in the turnaround in the competition department and hoped that his experience and knowledge will lead RCR to further success.
Day also paid tribute to Miller’s contributions to the organisation and was pleased to be given the opportunity. He also laid out his plans to bring changes to the organisation in order to move forward in the sport.
“We have nine more weeks to do everything we can to put the best race cars and trucks on the track. We have to do everything we can to capitalize on the opportunity to win championships in the Sprint Cup Series, Camping World Truck Series, and the ARCA Series.”
Day said. “Finally, we are looking within our organization to find ways to perform better as our sport continues to evolve, to look at different ways to approach new opportunities and new processes.”
Team RCR will be hoping that the move pays off, with Kevin Harvick, their only driver in the Chase currently at the top of the points standing for the Sprint Cup.
