Kent in control against Essex in County Championship Division Two
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kent-c802, at the County Ground, Chelmsford in England on Friday. Kent were all-out for 247 in their first innings. In reply, the hosts lost six wickets for just 49 runs until the close
of the first day’s play.
Kent captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Robert-Key-c2349 elected to bat first after winning the toss. The conditions were good for batting, but there was also some swing and seam movement for the bowlers. The visitors got off to a dismal start, as they lost Key in the very first over of
the innings. The seasoned campaigner lasted only two balls and failed to open his account.
Sam Northeast then walked out to the middle to join opening batsman Joe Denly. The pair looked to steady the innings, but the Kent opener was unable to carry onto the start he got, getting out after scoring 24 runs. He was followed by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Martin-van-Jaarsveld-c74944,
who got out after adding just one run to the total.
Wicketkeeper batsman Geraint Jones provided good support to Northeast, as the pair put together 44 runs for the fourth wicket. However, Jones also got out after getting a start, scoring 23 runs in his innings.
Wickets kept on tumbling for the visitors, but Northeast refused to throw his wicket away. He batted superbly, scoring 112 runs off 170 balls with the help of 10 fours and two sixes. The stylish first-drop batsman guided his team’s total close to the 250-run
mark and was the ninth wicket to fall in the innings.
The fast bowlers enjoyed bowling to the batsmen, as the ball did a few tricks in the air and off the pitch. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/David-Masters-c1333 and Maurice Chambers did a good job for the hosts, taking three wickets apiece. They got good support from the 17-year-old Reece Topley,
who picked up two victims.
The start to the Essex innings was not a good one either, as they lost star opener Alastair Cook early. The tall left-hander struggled to get going and managed only six runs before getting out. He was soon followed by his opening partner http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Billy-Godleman-c1164,
who scored 13 runs in his innings.
Things got worse for the hosts, as they lost Ravi Bopara and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jaik-Mickleburgh-c1627 on the same total of 39. Bopara was unable to open his account whereas the first-drop Mickleburgh got out after adding 17 runs to the total.
