Kent v Middlesex: County Championship Division Two – Middlesex’s First Innings
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Wednesday, August 17, 2011.
The hosts would have liked a much better performance, especially after their skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Robert-Key-c2349 had elected to bat first at the toss. However, they could have been in deep trouble being 155/8 at one stage of the innings.
A couple of impressive performances from the lower-order players http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Coles-c51379 stretched the total to 242 in the end. They scored 31 and 41 in their respective outings.
On the other hand Middlesex would have been quite happy with the effort of their bowling. However, this was just the half job done for the team, as they needed to bat well in order to take a solid first innings lead.
The visitors ended up with a 61-run lead in the end, as they were bowled out for 303 runs in their first innings. Opening batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Sam-Robson-c2421 was the highest scorer of the innings with 95 runs at the top of the order.
The pitch was good for the batsmen, but it also had some assistance for the bowlers, which made the competition pretty much even.
The start for Middlesex was a fabulous one and the team appeared to end up with a massive first innings lead at one stage. Openers Robson and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scott-Newman-c2467 put together 99 runs for the first wicket before the latter was dismissed for 34 runs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Rogers-c1249 also got a solid start to his innings, but failed to make most of it in the end. He got out after adding 28 runs to the total.
However, the innings was carried forward by Robson and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dawid-Malan-c1344. The pair collected 57 runs for the third wicket stand, guiding the team’s total above 200.
The visitors were in full control of the match at that stage, but four quick wickets helped Kent bounce back strongly.
Robson got out after contributing 95 runs to the total with the help of 14 boundaries. He was followed by the team’s skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Simpson-c1722 in quick succession. The trio got out for 0, 4 and 0 respectively.
However, Malan played until the end of the innings, collecting 68 runs for his side. His effort guided the team to 303 runs in the end.
Kent’s fight back was led by Pakistan’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Wahab-Riaz-c95839 and Matt Coles. Both took 3 wickets apiece in the innings, but the opposition still got away with a useful first innings lead.
