Kent v Middlesex: County Championship Division Two – Middlesex’s Second Innings
Middlesex needed 272 runs for victory against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Saturday, August 20, 2011.
Although http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Middlesex-c817 had scored more than 300 in their first innings, they would have been under immense pressure while chasing the target.
The conditions had changed to a certain extent, as the pitch was offering some assistance to the bowlers as well, which was not good news for the visitors.
However, conditions were not unplayable for the batsmen. They just needed to apply themselves at the crease in order to score big runs.
Unfortunately for Middlesex, their batsmen failed to cope up with the pressure exerted by the opposition’s bowlers. England’s http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Jamie-Dalrymple-c1658 became the only player to score a century in the entire match, but his effort went in vain in the end, as the team
was all out for 202 runs.
Apart from Dalrymple, only three other players managed to reach double figures wit the second best score of the innings from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Chris-Rogers-c1249, who collected 26.
Middlesex needed a solid start by their openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Scott-Newman-c2467 in order to challenge the opposition. However, the top-order of the team failed miserably and five wickets fell for just 51 runs on the board.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Newman-c79297 was the first man to be dismissed in the innings, getting out for a duck. He was followed by Robson, who top scored the first innings with 95 runs. The seasoned opener managed just 12 runs this time around.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Neil-Dexter-c2091 were unable to get going and were dismissed for 0 each in their respective outings. This left the team in a spot of bother at 30/4.
Rogers looked impressive, but was unable to make most of the start he got to his innings. He was the fifth wicket to fall in the innings after collecting 26 runs, as the visitors lost half their side for 51 runs.
Dalrymple and wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/John-Simpson-c1722 put together 49 runs for the sixth wicket partnership before the latter got out after collecting 19 runs.
There was no significant impression from any of the lower-order players, but Dalrymple played one of his best knocks. He ended up with an unbeaten 108 runs with the help of 10 fours and 3 sixes. He lacked support from his team-mates otherwise the match could
have been easily won by Middlesex.
The team was restricted to 202 in the end, courtesy a terrific spell of bowling from Kent’s Darren http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Stevens-c91368. He took 4 wickets in the innings.
