Street Sense won the derby amazingly, he followed the rail and was wayyy back until the last few furlongs them he scooted in and made first!!! It was amazing!! I was rooting for Storm in May but oh well =(

Anyways, did anyone else notice how bad those jockeys whip their horses-- yikes it makes me cringe

  1. Whoo hoo, it was so much fun.  And if you watch it again, you will see that the jockey had to hold him back...Street Sense just wants to run.  I know what you mean about seeing the jockey whip the horse, but their hide is so tough, it's nothing like our skin.  If you watch some jockeys, you'll see that they show the horse the whip (it's called a crop), it really doesn't hurt them, though.  I don't like watching it either, even though I know it doesn't really hurt.

I love Storm in May, too, because of his blindness.  Did you know that the owners bought him for $16,000 and he's won $450,000?  What a beautiful horse, don't you think?  If he would have been blind in his left eye, who knows what would have happened...at least he can see the rail.

Edit:  I understand what you're saying, and appreciate your sentiments, too.  I truly wish that horses could go out to pasture and race against each other within their natural environment.  Unfortunately, it's not going to happen until human beings stop trying to compete with each other.

  2. I think it was terrible how they kept on whippin their horses.

  3. it is only to keep their attention on the task at hand, they r very well treated never u doubt that

  4. yeah, i was going for domenican..... whatever. Funny how all that hype and planning goes into like a 30 second race. Street Sense sounds like a winning name though, he was the favorite... so it's not like a surprise.

  5. I did notice Calvin Borel whipped, or at least seemed to whip the horse 3 or 4 times when he came out from the rail.

  7. Whipping the horses is mostly for keeping their attention on the race, it doesnt hurt them unless it is done exessivly (meaning for such a prolonged period of time the horse gets cuts and welts, and believe me the horse would react if it were hit excessivly or on the face.) Excessive hitting is not allowed, and the horse would react in an obvious way if it were in pain, it would not run faster out of pain, but would buck or get sour of running.

It is nearly impossible for a human to actually injure a horse useing their strength alone. Horses have very thick skin and a few smacks on the butt from a crop will not hurt them.
