Kentucky Derby favourite and Florida Derby winner Dialed In to undergo surgery – Will miss Season
The son of Mineshaft has not run since the Preakness Stakes due to his injured knee. The winner of the Grade One Florida Derby, Dialed In’s x-rays revealed a bone chip in his right knee, which could mean that the three year old brown colt will miss the remainder
of the season.
Favourite to win the Grade One Kentucky Derby but beaten into eighth is out for an undetermined period of time. Trainer, Nick Zito, confirmed that Dialed In will be out of training for a while.
Coming out of the Preakness Stakes, Dialed In was not walking the way he normally did and there was something different with his knee. It was not taken into consideration straight away because at that time the problem with his knee did not seem to be an
issue.
X-rays further revealed that his knee is missing a bone chip and that caused Dialed In’s extraction from competitive racing and training as well.
Fourth in the Preakness, Dialed In was looking good this season with a Florida Derby win in the beginning of the year 2011. Unfortunately, it seems as if he will not run for the rest of the season.
Dialed In is set to undergo surgery next week and hopefully after that he will get back in training. It is obvious that the colt’s connections are disappointed and wanted him to run for the rest of the season, especially in the Travers Stakes at Saratoga.
Robert V LaPenta, who owns, Dialed In, is hopeful that as a four year old, the colt will wreak havoc in the 2012 season despite missing a good chunk of the 2011 season. His connections are extremely happy that he was called as a favourite to win the Kentucky
Derby and also ran in the Preakness Stakes where he was set as a 5-to-1 favourite but finished fourth for the $5 million bonus.
Victories such as the Grade One Florida Derby and the Grade Three Holy Bull Stakes made Dialed In eligible for the Preakness Stakes 5.5 bonus.
A surgery to look forward to and then training to assess the colt’s situation, where anything could go wrong but trainer, Nick Zito, and, owner, Robert V LaPenta, are there to make sure everything goes according to plan.
To run him in the Kentucky Derby, or, the whole of Triple Crown would be one of the targets for Dialed In’s connections. Travers Stakes will be part of the plan too and this time around maybe the bay colt will get fair chances and win races over his own
ability.
Dialed In by Mineshaft has captured three wins and a single runner up in his six starts with earnings of $939,206.
