Kentucky becomes first school in history to have the top two selectees in NBA draft - Update
After winning their NCAA Championship earlier in the year, NBA draft on Thursday night put an exclamation mark over a dominant year for the University of Kentucky.
By having their two top prospects drafted at the number one and two selections, Wildcats became the first ever school to achieve that feat.
Looking forward to draft night, it had widely been predicted that freshman sensation Anthony Davis is going to be the number one pick for New Orleans Hornets.
When NBA Commissioner, David Stern announced Davis`s name as the overall number one pick, he got up to share an embrace with fellow college team mate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist.
"My arm was shaking and my hands were sweaty. Got up and hugged Michael, my best friend, wanted to hug him for a minute," Davis said. "When my name got called, wanted to make sure he stayed close."
However Kentucky backed it up with another selection, Kidd-Gilchrist got selected at number two by Charlotte Bobcats highlighting the Wildcats supremacy in this year’s draft.
“It's crazy," Davis said. "Michael is a great player. We have two down and four more to go. Hopefully, all of them will go in the first round."
Davis was the Most Outstanding Player of the final four as he averaged double-double figures in points and rebounds throughout the season.
At the same time blessed with a tireless motor, Kidd-Gilchrist had been one of the best players for Kentucky. He averaged 11.9 points and 7.4 rebounds in his freshman season.
Kentucky also had four other players being drafted on Thursday night with two more getting selected in the first round and the last two, coming in the second round.
Along with Davis and Kidd-Gilchrist, Terrence Jones was drafted by Houston Rockets and Marquis Teague went to Chicago Bulls, to round up the first round selections.
The two selections of Kentucky players in the second round were Doron Lamb to the Milwaukee Bucks and Darius Miller was drafted by the Hornets as well.
It was a history making night for Kentucky and Coach John Calipari was present among others to congratulate the young players and was seen hugging Davis and Gilchrist at the start of the night.
