  1. The bigger the races the more money that qualify the colt or filly toward the race. This eliminates the horses that have very little chance of success and sorts the good ones from the bad..

  2. usually they run in 3-4 their 3 year old season before the derby and 2-3 in their 2 year old season.

but then you have horses like curlin who was making only his 4th lifetime start in the derby after no 2 year old starts and street sense who made 5 starts at 2 and only 2 starts at 3.

and yes, they all have to be 3 year olds.  all registered thoroughbreds have jan. 1 as their official birthday, to eliminate confusion.

  3. The horses for the Kentucky Derby are 3-year olds, but the number of races is not a factor. The most important qualifying factor is the amount the horse has earned prior to the Derby to make him eligible.  However, I can not find the amount.

This is a good article that I found that does list all the prep races from now until that first Saturday in May.

  4. As others have said, there is no one number of races that horses have to run to qualify, purse money is the determining factor.  Six is probably the median.  Tiago ran in three last year and qualified since one was the Santa Anita Derby.  Barbaro had five or six under his belt.  Some run more than that, some less.

  5. A horse has to be three years old to run in the Kentucky derby and has to run in at least one qualifying race prior to "the big day"

  6. pyro sucks looking like war pass i got a good longshot wicked style i know his owners i have personally been around him he is a winner
