Kenyan Cricket Board decides to launch women’s cricket league – Cricket News Update
First of its kind, a Women’s Cricket League has been announced by Cricket http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kenya-c752. The unique league is scheduled to begin from Sunday, July 10, 2011, in Nairobi.
This league provides opportunity to the women, who have been playing cricket for Kenya since long, but did not get any local platform to display their skills. The Women’s Cricket League will include all the women cricketers, who will be divided into 4 teams.
These four teams are: Chania Sharks, Athi Mambas, Tana http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Dolphins-c781 and Yala Whales.
The Women’s League is based on T20 and 40-over formats. The T20 fixtures will stretch over a period of 2 months, followed by exciting 40-40 matches.

Right-handed batter, Emily Ruto, who is also the coach for the national Women Cricket team, expressed her joy over launch of the league, saying, “It is an important event for us. It has come at a good time and it will definitely be a good way to assess where
we are as a country as far as women cricket is concerned in the country. We expect to see new players coming up which will be a good thing for us.”
The two teams challenging each other on Sunday will be Chania Sharks and Yala whales. This fixture will take place at Ruaraka Sports Club in Nairobi.
Many senior players deem this league as an opportunity for the girls to prepare for the Africa T20 tournament, which will be held in December this year.
Kenyan women cricketers have remained low-profile, overshadowed by the male cricketers of the country. This league is a positive development for the Kenyan women cricketers, expressed the Coach Dun Okinyo.
She stated, “It’s good news. I can’t wait to see these girls fighting it out against each other for the next four months. I expect to see good cricket from this girls.”
With the advent of an independent event, Omamo of Yala Whales, stated that now there would be better prospects for improvement and development in women cricket.
Head of the two remaining teams, Bhakita and Banja, consider the teams to be well balanced having equivalent talent, skill and experience. Both these talented players are hopeful about quality of the league matches.
