Kenyon Martin still not playing for any team unless they offer him mini mid-level exception – NBA News
The new Collective Bargaining Agreement has changed a number of things in the NBA, among them being the money that the players are receiving as salaries. Under the new CBA, players who have previously been used to receiving contracts
worth a few millions a year are now finding it difficult to receive the same sort of remuneration, and many have had to cut down their expectations and sign for veteran minimum contracts. We saw a lot of those contracts being handed out over the summer, and
many teams gained valuable veteran players through those contracts. However, there are some who are refusing to sign up for a veteran’s minimum, and Kenyon Martin is one of them.
One of the best finishers near the rim during his era, Martin has made good money in salaries over the course of his career. However, Martin still feels that he deserves the mini mid-level exception worth around $3 million, and
is yet to settle for anything lower than that. His stand in the matter has resulted in him not being picked up by any team in the league so far for the next season, but Martin is not bothered about any of that and is not willing to nudge from his stand or
viewpoint.
Jared Zwerling of ESPNNewYork.com talked with Martin recently in which the issue came up and Martin once again stressed that he felt he deserved the mini mid-level exception atleast, considering his talents, and was not going to
settle for anything less.
“Kenyon Martin still wants to return to the NBA and play for a championship-contending team, but believes worth is mini mid-level or higher,” tweeted Zwerling.
Unfortunately for Martin, there are not many teams left in the league that have not spent their mini mid level exception or are still willing to spend it. Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Brooklyn Nets, Los Angeles
Clippers and San Antonio Spurs have all used their mini mid-level exception. The Los Angeles Lakers have not used it yet, but considering that they are well beyond the salary cap, it is unlikely that they are going to use it. The Denver Nuggets are one team
that have the mini mid-level exception left to use, but whether they qualify as a contender depends on who you are asking from. As of now, Martin is nowhere near a contract deal with any team in the league, and the chances of him landing one anytime soon are
bleak as well.
