Former South African captain, Kepler Wessels, reckons that the English bowlers will have to be at their best against a strong Proteas batting if they want to level the series at Lord’s.
Wessels became the first South African captain to lead his team in the post-Apartheid era and clinched a historic 356-run victory over http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 at Lord’s after scoring a masterful century during the Proteas’ first English tour in 1994, in almost three decades.
The former skipper feels that the Poms will be better off to rest a pace man, in order to make way for http://www.senore.com/Cricket/GP-Swann-c1501, who has a good record at the venue and could play a vital role in an English victory.
“They will play a spinner this time and Graeme Swann will come into the team at the expense of a fourth specialist pace bowler,” Wessels said.
Swann was dropped for the first time since 2009, but his replacement http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ST-Finn-c2566 had a below-par Test at Headingley, prompting calls from cricket experts to bring the spin wizard back for the decisive third Test.
The 54-year-old is not impressed the way the Englishmen have so far bowled to the tourists in the ongoing series, and believes that despite making regular inroads during the second Test, the home side did not leave a lasting impression on their opposition,
who are still riding high on their resounding success achieved at the Oval.
“England's major problem remains their inability to bowl the immensely powerful South African batting line-up out twice. The England bowling attack is low on confidence after being mauled by the rampant South African top order at the Oval and then not being
able to make much of an impression on the South African batsmen at Headingley either,” the former left-handed batsman added.
The former captain however, believes that the hosts have the requisite fire-power in their bowling armory to make a valiant comeback in the Test to level the series and save their top Test-ranking.
“They will need an inspired performance by their bowling attack to turn the tables in the final test,” Wessels concluded.
The visitors are on the verge of becoming the world’s new number one Test side even if they manage to draw the final Test however, their Test campaign could end on a higher note with another victory in the Lord’s Test, starting today.
