Kepler Wessels welcomes the news that Gary Kirsten and Allan Donald would be new Proteas coaches
The former South Africa captain Kepler Wessels, has welcomed the news that Gary Kirsten will be the new Proteas coach and Kirsten’s former teammate, Allan Donald would be assisting him.
Wessels hailed the former South Africa batsman, for his successful stint as team India coach and hoped his experience will help the Proteas as well.
"Gary's appointment will be good for South African cricket,” said Wessels while talking to the media reporters on Saturday. “He has done unbelievably well in India. He has a great work ethic and knows what is expected of a coach at international level,"
he added further.
Wessels, the 53-year-old cricket itinerant and boxing enthusiast, also hailed Donald for his passion for South Africa cricket and hoped he will do a good job.
"Allan wanted to be involved with the Proteas for a considerable amount of time,” said the former Proteas skipper. “He is very passionate about South African cricket and he will do a good job. He has coached quite a lot and is good technically and tactically,"
he added.
A South Africa weekly, on Saturday reported that Kirsten and his former teammate, Allan Donald are likely to become new coaches of the South Africa cricket team.
The Cricket South Africa will make a formal announcement about new coaches on Monday, June 6. Over the past two months, the CSA officials interviewed several candidates from across the globe to find Corrie van Zyl’s successor.
Kirsten and Richard Pybus were the frontrunners for the coveted role after John Buchanan and Duncan Fletcher, who were also believed to be in contention for the job, accepted parallel positions with New Zealand and India respectively.
But Kirsten’s successful record as team India’s coach over the past couple of years makes him a certain favourite to be van Zyl’s successor. Kirsten, during his coaching stint with the Men in Blue, not only steered them to the Test No. 1 spot but also saw
them lifting their first World Champ title in the past 18 years, in April this year.
According to the reports, Cricket South Africa (CSA) would make a formal announcement on Monday ending two-month speculation as the officials interviewed several candidates from across the globe for the position.
Donald, who was part of New Zealand's support staff during the ICC World Cup 2011, has also been assistant coach of England.
