Question:

Kerala, India, 1st week in September?

Opportunistic vacation: I'll be working in Bangalore, but I have time to travel for 1 week (1st time to India). I've already got my tickets to Kochi. I plan to spend 3-6 days in Kerala (later on to Coorg, maybe Ooty if I only stay 3 days). Given it's monsoon season - what itinerary do people suggest? Backwaters a good idea this time of year - or not?

  2. Welcome to India. It should be dry in Kerala around that time, Monsoon is usually on a break until late September. Backwaters are a most excellent idea! If your budget allows for a house boat, make sure you spend at least two nights on the waters so that you have one full day cruising. Otherways you would just have one afternoon and they would drop you right after breakfast the next day. The backwaters are just fabulous. Two nights on a smaller houseboat should be around 12,000 RS or so, but compare and bargain over it. Start your house boat trip from Alleppey (1,5h south of Cochin), a good hotel to overnight in Alleppey in case you need to would be Hotel Royale Park for less than 1,000 RS and nice clean rooms. Buy a family pack of "Odomos" mosquito repellant cream at any medical store, its essential on the backwaters.

Otherways you might want to spend a day or two at a beach, but there are no nice beaches with infrastructure around Cochin and north of it - you would need to go down to Varkala or Kovalam, but do not underestimate the time for transit on the bad and busy Kerala roads, going to Trivandrum from Cochin easily takes half a day alone. So within just one week, I would recommend you spend as much time as you can around the Alleppey / Kottayam backwaters and go straight to Ooty, which is also a nice place, and then on to Bangalore, maybe with another stopover in Mysore.

  3. Even if it's mansoon(I hope the end of mansoon) you can enjoy the backwaters in Kerala, it's really owesome. You can see more details in the below web page
