Goa 512 v Kerala 297 & 120 - Match drawn
On Tuesday, Goa saw their first innings mammoth tally of 512 go to waste, as their Group C match in the ongoing Ranji Trophy against Kerala ended in a draw, at Perintalmanna Cricket Stadium, Malappuram.
Goa had dominated their opposition in the four-day game, but yet failed to secure a win, perhaps it was due to their slow paced wicket taking that cost them this game as many would argue that had they dug in a bit earlier, and maintained pressure on their opponents they might have been able to go home with smiles on their faces.
However, Kerala batsmen proved that they had stronger wits than their rivals as they, in their second innings, averted a batting meltdown.
While Goa batted for only a day, Kerala batsmen stayed in the centre for three days and yet failed to put enough runs on the board to earn themselves a win.
It seemed that Kerala had it figured out right from the start that they needed to go for a draw instead of a likeable victory.
They ended the third day after amassing 248 runs for the loss of six batsmen and needed to stay on the wicket - on the final day - to deny Goa any pleasure.
PR Prem and AG Kodoth began the final day’s proceedings, but the batting pair perished with 268 on the board when Kodoth was dismissed by Bandekar after scoring 31 runs.
With the number-four batsman, Prem, still in the middle they had nothing to worry about while the fielders had their work cut out for them for as long as the batsman was standing in the middle.
Goa wrapped up the innings with Kerala on 297. PR Prem, however stayed unbeaten with 77 runs to his name.
Forced to a follow-on, Kerala had a poor start as they lost their first wicket with only eight runs on the board.
PR Prem was unlucky this time as he fell after belting only 13 runs before he was caught and bowled by Jakati. At the time of this wicket, Kerala had scored only 23 runs.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/VA-Jagadeesh-c2742 and RM Fernandez then staged a match saving partnership as they took the score to 103.
While Jagadeesh departed after bolstering 40 runs, Fernandez stayed unbeaten on 52 as he saw his side finish the day on 120 runs for the loss of four wickets.
