Keri Anne Payne clinches Women’s 10km title - 2011 FINA World Championships
Great Britain’s open water swimmer, Keri Anne Payne took home the Women’s 10km crown at the 2011 FINA World Championships in Shanghai, China, on Monday, July 18.
Payne completed her distance in the respective meet with a sterling time of 2 hours, 1 minute and 58.1 seconds. While speaking about her individual performance in the corresponding meet, Payne said, “I’m really please with that. Last year wasn’t the best
for me so this is a massive positive and I’ve also just found out my sister (Janine) is in labour back in the UK so hopefully it will be a good day all round.”
She added that the weather conditions for swimming were really nice, since it was a nice sunny day. Discussing about the strategy used in the meet, Payne said, “I just tried to make it as easy as I could because I knew that if someone did attack I would
have enough in my legs to defend and kick-on.”
With her scintillating performance in the 10km category, Keri Anne Payne booked her place for the 2012 Olympic Games, in London. Payne said that she could not be better off at this point in time and these are indeed fascinating feelings for her, but she
contemplates that she has to carry on with her performance, as next year is going to be harder for her.
Earlier, Payne won the gold medal in the 10km distance at the 2009 World Championships, in Rome. In addition, she secured the silver medal in the respective race at the 2008 Olympic Games, in Beijing. She also earned the gold medal in the 400m freestyle
at the 2004 European Championships, in Vienna.
In the meantime, Italian Martina Grimaldi earned the silver medal with a time of 2 hours, 01 minute and 59.9 seconds, while Marianna Lymperta of Greece secured the bronze medal with a time of 2 hours, 02 minutes and 01.8 seconds.
