Kerri Walsh and Casey Jennings spend day with Charleston volleyball team
On Monday, September 5 the beach volleyball playing husband and wife, American Kerri Walsh and Casey Jennings, got a little time out of their busy schedules and spent this past weekend with Charleston volleyball team at the Georgia State Invitational. The
Olympic gold medallist, Walsh, recently returned home after competing at the SWATCH FIVB HP Beach Open in Netherlands and generously volunteered her time for the clinic for the Charleston volleyball team.
The coaching session was held at Windjammer on the Isle of Palms on Sunday, September 4, where a good number of young girls showed up. The sole purpose of this clinic was to teach the new crop of beach volleyball players about the fundamentals of the game.
Walsh and Jennings supervised the activity and conducted special drills. The day was started with different types of instruction manuals and exercises. Later on, players were divided into teams and offered on-the-court practice in the afternoon.
Walsh was delighted to impart her knowledge of beach volleyball to young and aspiring athletes. She talked about her experience with student athletes and shared her thoughts later and stated, "My husband and I have been so blessed to play this sport as a
career for so many years now, and we love giving back. We were so lucky to have the College of Charleston girls out here helping us out.”
She further added that there are so many young girls who are looking for inspiration and they are willing to take the game of beach volleyball to the next level. It made her feel very special to see College girls out there working hard and getting sandy
for their passion. She concluded by saying, “It was special for me, special for the girls and I hope it was special for the College of Charleston."
It was indeed a successful session for the students of Charleston College. It was great opportunity for players to learn tips and tricks of the game from a renowned beach volleyball player. Charleston College has a strong presence in the NCAA Division I
and will sponsor sand volleyball as a varsity sport in the first-ever NCAA sanctioned season.
