Keven Mealamu expecting close match against Springboks in Tri Nations - Rugby News
Keven Mealamu, who will lead the All Blacks in their upcoming clash of the Tri Nations Cup 2011, has anticipated a close contest against the South African Springboks on August 20 in Port Elizabeth. Talking to the media on August 20th the stand-in
captain for the All Blacks said that his side will not underestimate the Boks based on their previous performances in the event. He added that a tight competition is expected in today’s outing and his side is ready for it.
The Boks have been struggling with their form in the ongoing Tri Nations Cup. They have cut a sorry figure in the matches played so far and are still standing winless in the tournament. Meanwhile, the All Blacks are in full swing at the moment and have not
recorded any defeats so far in the championship.
Mealamu has been given command of the power-house All Blacks in the absence of Richie McCaw. The iconic McCaw has been rested by the All Blacks head coach Graham Henry for their last clash of Tri Nations against Wallabies on August 27.
Talking to the media about their upcoming fixture against the Boks, Mealamu said that, “We have a lot of respect for the Springboks. You never think you can come to South Africa and just win a game. We have really taken this week on really well. We aren't
over-confident about anything because we know how hard it is to win over here against the Springboks. You never take that for granted.”
He further said that, “There's been an awesome atmosphere during the week and a lot of supporters around town - it's got a real feel of the old traditional South Africa - New Zealand game.”
Mealamu is a seasoned member of the All Blacks side and has been playing for his national side since 2002. He has represented the All Blacks in 84 games at the position of hooker and scored 55 points.
