Kevin Anderson ousts Andy Murray in the second round – Rogers Cup 2011
Unseeded Kevin Anderson of South Africa made the biggest upset of the tournament so far as he defeated fourth seed and two-time defending champion Andy Murray of Great Britain in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 in the first round at the
Rogers Cup in Montreal on Tuesday. The South African needed just an hour and nine minutes to clinch a one-sided encounter.
Anderson came roaring into the match and made a solid start. The South African took lead straightaway as he claimed first three games of the opening set, breaking Murray in the second game and holding his serve in the next game
to grab a 3-0 lead. The Brit failed to break back throughout the set, losing it 3-6.
The six feet and eight inches tall South African made full use of his huge first serves as he smacked three aces and grabbed an amazing fourteen of the fifteen first service points in the opening set. Anderson also had a decent
second serve performance, winning seven of the eleven second service points. On the other hand, Murray lost most of the points on the second serve, losing five out of eight of them. The Brit claimed only one of the fifteen first return points and failed to
save one of the two break points he faced in the first set.
Anderson demolished Murray in the second set, allowing the Brit to win only one game and breaking him three times to win the set 6-1.
The Johannesburg resident kept his first serve percentage at 75 percent, sealing twelve of the fifteen points on the first serve in the second set.
With this win, Anderson improved to a 29-18 win/loss record this season. The South African captured his maiden title at the SA Open earlier this year.
Talking to the reporters after the match, Anderson said, "It was probably not exactly what I was expecting. At the same time I think some of the way I played, the way I served today, I think I did make it pretty tough for him.
I felt I came forward very well and I executed very well.”
The South African added, commenting on his opponent, "I've played him a couple years back and he beat me pretty bad. I knew what I had to do today. I thought I came out and played really well, played the way I wanted to play. It
feels great, obviously. He's a great player."
Anderson will play either fourteenth seed Stanislas Wawrinka of Switzerland or American qualifier Michael Russell in the round of 16.
