Kevin Anderson outplays Florent Senna to make it to Delray Beach Championships quarter-final
Fifth seed Kevin Anderson outplayed veteran Florent Serra of France in the second round of the Delray Beach International Championships on Thursday night. The contest lasted for less than an hour, with Anderson winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
The one-sided affair witnessed sheer brilliance of the South African, who bettered his opponent in every segment of the game. Anderson’s serve remained unbroken in the match while he cashed in most of the break opportunities.
Anderson’s powerful serve proved critical in his success; the South African delivered 73 percent of his first serves on target while his opponent just got 39 percent right. Anderson won 29 out of 33 points on his first serve and then 8 off 12 on the second
serve.
Anderson cracked only 6 aces in the match but he won 37 out of 45 total service points; he also converted 16 off 27 second return points.
Serra had no answer to the magnificent serve game of his opponent and appeared under pressure right from the start. He committed plenty of unforced errors in the contest and got only one serve break chance in the match, which he frittered away.
The fifth seed ignited the contest in an attacking manner and immediately broke the opponent’s serve in the opener. His mighty forehand worked perfectly as he belted plenty of winners down the line. His excellent shot selection and accurate timing was the
key to his success.
Serra’s stroke timing was poor and his footwork was sluggish. He missed some easy opportunities near the net and often showed signs of dejection after doing so.
Anderson converted two of the three breaking chances and reeled off three straight games in the set. His opponent eventually succumbed at 6-1 in the first set of the match.
Serra gathered his abilities in the following set and put up a little resistance to his opponent. His feet began to move more quickly and he lifted his game by winning 100 percent of his first serve points. The Frenchman dropped his first serve percentage
to 34 and only bagged 2 out of 22 return points.
The South African got one serve break chance and he capitalised upon it to seal the deciding set 6-4. Anderson won the contest in only 55 minutes to qualify for the quarter-finals.
