Kevin Anderson overcomes Robby Ginepri in round one – Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012
South African number one, Kevin Anderson, blasted past the local qualifier, Robby Ginepri, in straight sets at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships 2012 on Wednesday. He penned down a 7-5, 6-3 score line against the world number 218 to secure a place in the round of 16 at this hard court tournament taking place in Memphis, United States.
The seventh seed stayed solid throughout the match and smacked 19 aces to pull out this victory in 75-minutes. Facing each other for the second time, Anderson not only extended lead in the FedEx ATP Head 2 Head series by 2-0 against the American but also advanced into the second round at this ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 series event.
Anderson, ranked 36th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, entered the Racquet Club of Memphis with conviction and held his serve in the opening game. He maintained his intensity after this and slide remaining serves without facing any barrier. The South African then got the breakthrough in the last game and bagged the opener with a 7-5 win.
The 25-year-old kept momentum floating into the following set and jumped to a 3-0 lead with a break of serve. He plucked in remaining serves without facing any hindrance and eventually clinched the set with a 6-3 score line.
The Johannesburg native spilled four double faults and clobbered a lower first serve share. However, he spectacularly marked 29 out of 30 points on it and dominated throughout the match.
Anderson will next confront the local wild card entrant, Sam Querrey, who hit back from a set down to triumph over Colombia’s Alejandro Falla in a three set thriller.
Polish tennis ace, Lukasz Kubot, also overpowered a local qualifier to book a spot in the second round. He warded off early resistance to formulate a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory against Jesse Levine.
The Pole suffered the first blow in the eleventh game but quickly counter-attacked in the very next game. He not only snatched his break back but dominated in the tie-breaker to register a 7-6(2) score line.
Kubot improved his winning ways in the proceeding set and rapidly swiped in entire serves without facing any real challenge. He got the breakthrough in the fifth game and pulled out the set with a 6-4 win.
Next challenge for the world number 54 is the high spirited German, Philipp Petzschner, who stunned the sixth seed, Julien Benneteau, in straight sets to set-up this date.
