Kevin Anderson plonks Horacio Zeballos to reach round three – French Open 2012
South African number one, Kevin Anderson, took down the Argentinean contestant, Horacio Zeballos, in a four-set nail-biter at the Roland Garros 2012 on Wednesday. He summed up a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 success against the world number 108 at this second of the
four Grand Slam event held in Paris, France.
Seeded 31st in this major red clay court tournament, Anderson, lost his path in the second set but quickly counterattacked and carved out the victory with a bagel.
The 26-year-old assertively stepped on the court number 17 and held his opening serve to level the scores at 1-1. He then continued hitting powerful groundstrokes and kept his remaining serves without facing any barrier. Anderson got the breakthrough in
the eighth game and clicked the opener by winning six games to three.
Meanwhile, the left-handed Argentine re-focused his strategy and dug his way back in the game. He earned the critical break in the fourth game and leaped to a 4-1 lead. Zeballos held his remaining serves with poise and pocketed the set with a 6-3 win.
Anderson sought his momentum again in the third set and swiftly swiped in his entire serves without facing any breakpoint. He cashed in the lone break chance in the fourth game and pulled out the set with a 6-3 score line.
Ranked 34th in the South African Airways ATP World Tour Rankings, Anderson went out of control in the fourth set. He blasted massive forehands and winded out all six games in a row, eventually sealing the set with a bagel in less than half an
hour
Summing up the Johannesburg native’s performance, Anderson jolted down a better first serve share of 71 per cent in contrast with the Argentine’s 68 per cent and impressively clicked 58 out of 68 points on it. He spectacularly fired 21 vicious aces and hammered
54 winners to rule the match.
Up next for Anderson is the seventh seed, Tomas Berdych, who trashed the local contender, Michael Llodra, in straight sets to set up this battle.
The former world number one, Roger Federer, will accompany Anderson in the following round. He overpowered Adrian Ungur in a four-set thriller after capitalising four out of 12 break chances.
