Kevin Attard’s son Joshua Attard has a runner in the Valedictory Stakes
Trainer Kevin Attard’s son Joshua Attard, a big racing fan at the age of 9, owns the horse Get a Grip, and will send him to participate in the Canadian Grade 3, $150,000 Valedictory Stakes on the final card of the 2012 season, and also the last stakes race
of the Woodbine campaign.
Bred in Ireland by Eimear Mulhern, Get a Grip is heading into the 1 ¾ mile main track feature on the back of two strong second place finishes.
On 26 October, 2012, Get a Grip strut his stuff in a starter allowance going over a distance of 1 ¼ miles over Woodbine’s turf course, and finished second to winner Serious Indeed, who downed the distance in 3 minutes and 7.44 seconds.
The 5-year-old gelding by Royal Applause, Get a Grip followed up with a similar performance, this time over Woodbine’s All Weather track at about 1 ½ miles on 23 November, 2012.
The Valedictory Stakes prep race was won by Peyton, but Get a Grip flew in to finish second, as the finishing time for the 1 ½ mile test was 2 minutes and 37.08 seconds.
The 9-year-old young owner Joshua Attard will be at Woodbine to see his gelding compete in the race.
“My son is the world's biggest racing fan," said Kevin. "I'll come home after the races and he's on my iPad looking at historical charts and other racing stuff. He'll have 15 pages open, all devoted to racing. I loved racing when I was a kid, too, but nothing
like this. And he just loves this horse."
"It's been a bit of a trying year, so to go out with a bang on the last day of racing, I don't think you could ask for anything better," said Kevin. "We're going to give it our best shot."
Out of Alhaarth mare Landela, Get a Grip has a serious problem, with only two wins out of 27 starts, the gelding has an astounding 8 second place finishes, and that is what Kevin’s concern is going into the Valedictory Stakes.
The trainer would love to see his gelding win for his son, and give him an early Christmas present.
