Kevin Cheveldayoff officially hired as Winnipeg Team General Manager –National Hockey League Update
After much speculations and rumours, Kevin Cheveldayoff has officially accepted to become the National Hockey League’s (NHL) new Winnipeg team’s Executive Vice President and General Manager. This news was announced by the group that owns the team, True North
Sports and Entertainment, at the team’s new arena, the MTS Center in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
True North Sports and Entertainment are the rightful owners of the new Winnipeg team which is yet to be given a name.
They purchased Atlanta Thrashers and decided on relocating it to Manitoba’s capital city, where the prospects of having a hockey franchise were high and so far the people there are very excited.
The now former assistant GM of Chicago Blackhawks was excited to be working for the new Winnipeg team.
"Growing up on the Prairies I played my hockey just a little way down the road in Brandon", the native of Blaine Lake, Saskatoon, said after signing a five year contract with the team. “(Winnipeg GM) was a natural fit for me. It was almost too good to be
true".
There is still a little bit of formality left as the name is yet to be decided and is expected to be finalised later this month, when the NHL Board of Governors meet on June 21st to formally accept the sale of the team.
Cheveldayoff also believes that Winnipeg is a near perfect place for the new hockey team since it has been over 15 years since there has been a professional major league team in the city, thus, attracting a huge fan base.
"I think not having (NHL) hockey there for 15 years, it's kind of built up and built up to the point where I'm sure (fans) are ready to blow the doors off the hinges and get this thing going", he added.
They have already sold 13,000 tickets for the next regular season which was also their goal to be achieved by the month of September but has been met three months earlier, which makes this deal much more anticipated then expected before.
The new Winnipeg team and its fans are very thrilled to have a new Canadian team and the team has its goals set on kicking off the new season in a profound manner.
