Kevin Cordes pockets Men’s 100yard breaststroke gold: Day two – NCAA Division 1 Championship Meet
Kevin Cordes of Arizona pocketed gold medal of the Men’s 100yard breaststroke on second day of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division 1 Championship Meet at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center in Seattle, Wash on Friday, March 23.
Cordes stifled hopes of his competitors by occupying the crown of the 100yard event with an effort 51.71 seconds. His gold winning effort remained 0.07 seconds ahead of Carlos Almeida of Louisville, who stayed just an inch away from overwhelming the effort of his former finisher and transpired on the finishing end for silver medal by posting a time of 51.78 seconds.
He was chased by Martin Liivamagi of California, who geared up his efforts in the playoff, and escalated to third finest spot of the swim by producing a time of 51.93 seconds for bronze medal.
His commendable effort remained 0.25 seconds ahead of Carl Mickelson of Arizona, who failed to sustain his third spot in the final round and dropped to fourth position by clocking a time of 52.18 seconds. Mickelson was chased by Nolan Koon of California, who remained 0.24 seconds slower and clocked a time of 52.42 seconds for fifth position.
After a while, the audience experienced exhausting efforts of California’s Thomas Shields in the Men’s 100yard backstroke. Shields stayed considerably ahead of his opponents and claimed gold medal of the event by posting 44.86 seconds.
He was followed by David Nolan of Stanford, who achieved second position of the discipline by posting a time of 45.53 seconds. He remained 0.46 seconds ahead of Cole Cragin of Texas, who settled on the finishing blockade for bronze medal by submitting a time of 45.89 seconds.
Cragin was chased by Kyle Owens of Auburn, who stayed 0.09 seconds behind his former finisher and ended his swim in fourth best place by reporting a time of 45.98 seconds. Marcin Tarczynski of California claimed fifth position of the discipline as he touched the wall with an effort of 46.02 seconds.
Furthermore, the crowd acknowledged blistering performances of all swimmers while the winners collected their accolades at prize distribution ceremony of the championship.
